BIOGRAPHY

Powerhouse performer, LIZZY HOYT is a unique vocalist who transcends the limitations of musical genre.

A nationally recognized Celtic songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, guitar, harp), she has released five independent albums, two music videos, and given countless concert tours across Canada. Known for bringing history to life with her songs like “Vimy Ridge”, “New Lady on the Prairie”, and “White Feather”, she was awarded the QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL by the Governor General of Canada for her outstanding contribution to commemorating Canadian veterans and history through music. Her fifth album, The Parting Glass (May 3, 2022) is a collection of her favourite traditional songs and features Lizzy’s sublime vocals and poignant arranging. It won the 2023 Canadian Folk Music Award for Traditional Singer of the Year!

“The new album is stunning” - Andy Donnelly, The Celtic Show CKUA

In contrast to her folk music, Lizzy has recently added outstanding opera performances to her name! As Cinderella in Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA (Manitoba Opera, Brott Opera), Lizzy “dazzled in the title role…tossing off her sparkling coloratura passages” (Winnipeg Free Press). In Purcell’s DIDO AND AENEAS (Manitoba Underground Opera), Opera Canada praised her deeply felt performance which “infused the entire production with aching humanity”. Lizzy joined a star studded cast including Tracy Dahl and Andriana Chuchman to sing Ruggiero in Handel’s opera, Alcina for MANITOBA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and gave a world premiere performance of a new work commissioned for her by the MCO to highlight both her Celtic and classical singing (The Ruins of Time, by Kevin Lau). In addition to her dramatic work, Lizzy is equally at home with comedic characters. Opera Canada praised her “delicious, tongue-in-cheek characterization infused by keen comedic gifts” as she brought to life a passionate, positive, and fearless JULIA CHILD in Hoiby’s one-woman opera, "Bon Appétit” for Little Opera Company.

Baroque and bel canto music have been a natural fit with her background in traditional music and fiddling. Her sparkling coluratura, original ornamentation, rich mezzo sound and dramatic sense allow her to deliver exceptional performances ranging from chamber cantatas to pinnacle roles such as Rossini’s Cenerentola and Handel’s Ariodante.

Passionate about classical song repertoire, Lizzy has performed with Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Borealis, Symphony of the Kootenays, Lethbridge Symphony and Concordia Symphony and has given recitals for Edmonton Recital Society, Skywalk Concerts (Virtuosi), , St. Albert Chamber Music Society, Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective, Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society, and Arts on 817.

A member of Manitoba Opera’s 2020 Emerging Artist Program, she continues private studies with her teacher and mentor, Tracy Dahl, as well as with esteemed singers John Tessier and Peter Harvey. A participant in Tafelmusik’s Baroque Summer Institute, she also holds a Post-Bacceleaureate Diploma with distinction from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Alberta.

THE JOURNEY SO FAR

A talented multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, guitar, mandolin, harp), Lizzy began as a professional side musician in 1999 on fiddle and mandolin. After the release of her first solo album in 2007, she began booking her own concerts and tours in Canada. With the release of her album “Home” in 2010, Lizzy transitioned to full-time and with the release of “New Lady on the Prairie” in 2014 she secured her reputation as a poignant songwriter, celebrated singer, detailed arranger/producer and a powerhouse performer.

With numerous awards, tours and accolades under her belt, in 2015, Lizzy decided to follow up on a life-long love of opera and classical vocal repertoire. She had taken private singing lessons with Edmonton’s Eva Bostrand from 2010-2012 and felt a deep connection to the repertoire but was still unsure of what role this music would play in her artistic journey. Lizzy applied to the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy. Her positive experience helped guide her next decision - to pursue this music with the same dedication she had in her folk career. Upon moving to Winnipeg, she began studying privately with beloved Canadian soprano, Tracy Dahl. Over the next five years, while still touring with her Celtic-folk trio, Lizzy began performing in opera and classical concerts.

In 2020, Lizzy decided to ‘rebrand’ and bring both projects together under one name: LIZZY HOYT. Her dedication to excellent music, quality performance and truthful storytelling is ever present. And as always, her inviting personality allows audiences to share in the joy of music - no matter the genre!

More Celtic-Folk Music

As a songwriter with soaring melodies rooted in Celtic and folk traditions, Lizzy is known for bringing Canadian history to life with her award-winning songs like “Vimy Ridge”, “White Feather”, and “New Lady on the Prairie”. In 2013, Lizzy was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for her outstanding contribution to commemorating Canadian veterans and history through music.

Lizzy’s fourth album New Lady on the Prairie (produced by John Reischman and Lizzy Hoyt) demonstrates a mature and refined ‘trans-Atlantic’ sound that blends influences from Celtic, bluegrass and folk traditions. The title track, inspired by Lizzy’s great aunt immigrating to Canada from Ireland in the early 1900s, demonstrates her interest in historical songwriting and her ability to craft songs that are touching, poignant, and lyrically rich. Her talents as an arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist are also featured in spades (she recorded guitar, fiddle, harp, accordion and harmonies for the project). The album was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, Western Canadian Music Award and three Independent Music Awards. It was also named one of the Best Albums of 2014 by the Indie Acoustic Project.

Lizzy has enjoyed substantial success at folk radio as an independent artist. Following the release of New Lady on the Prairie, she was the 4th most payed Canadian album on FolkDJ Radio playlist and charted as #2 on the Roots Music Report for Celtic Artists. Despite the fact that the album was released in October, it still ranked among the top 20 most played Canadian albums of 2014!

She has been praised for her mastery of the fiddle, guitar and harp by the Edmonton Journal, Calgary Herald, Penguin Eggs, Bluegrass Unlimited, Star News and more.
